Where can we give a new home for our turtles?

We have 4 pet turtles at home which have become too large for their container, but I don’t want to just dump them somewhere. Where is a good place to put them so I know at least they will get food and will be relatively safe from predators? I was thinking of the botanic gardens, but are we allowed to do that? Anyone have a nice turtle area in their condo? We are in the area close to Braddell Road/Thomson Road. Thank you.

    Since they are used to being in captivity and having someone care for them your best bet would be to call all the petshops in your area and see if they’ll take them off your hands.Otherwise you may be handing them a death sentence.So O.k. they’ll sell them.So What? At least they’ll go to someone who will care for and appreciate them right?
    Barring that call the nearest zoo and ask them what you should do or see if maybe they’ll take them.

    Give them to a rescue group like the spca or another shelter.

    I agree that turtle Rescue is in order, but you might also try posting them on craigslist.com in the pet section. You can also as a rehoming fee for them. It’s worth a shot.

    What species?

    Red-ear Sliders are a problem. They get big, chase away or displace native species, and are a nuisance species in lakes and ponds around the world- far outside their native range. They also carry disease from their captive habitats that spread to the native populations who have no immunity.

    There are many places in the world where native turtles, some very rare, are being driven out by Sliders released by people who were not ready to care for the big, long-lived species.

    I do not recommend adding to the problem by releasing them anywhere they can get to a wild place. See if there is a rescue/rehab group near you, and animal shelter, or a place where there is a pond nowhere near a wild pond that will take them.

    I’ve got to point out that most of these places are already full- there are a LOT of people in your situation!

    One possibility…

    The founder of PETA once said that sometimes the only humane option for some animals is to put them to sleep forever.

    I am not a fan of this sort of thinking, but any wild or semi-wild place near you that is a good turtle space should already have its own turtles that are supposed to be there- whether you see them or not. Releasing yours will doom them- and they were there first and belong.
