What turtles are good for a 20 gallon tank?

turtles
LaLa asked:

So I have an empty 20 gallon tank and I really am looking forward to making it a part-land, part-water aquarium:]
Is there any type of turtle that would be okay to live in a 20 gallon tank?
Mud Turtle? Spotted Turtle? RES?
:]
Thanks!!!!!

[If turtles aren't good, what are some other pets besides fish btw.]

Red Eared Sliders are great water turtles. They do get big however, but slowly. You would eventually have to get a bigger tank. Sliders are true water turtles, but you would have to provide sunlight, and some sort of platform for them to get out of the water on to dry out their shells. This is vital for life. They are notoriously messy and require some sort of filtration to keep the tank reasonably clean. They also carry salmonella, so you would have to be especially careful to wash your hands after handling turtles.

There are also other varieties of water turtles, but the Sliders are the easiest to get. If you want more land than water, you would have to consider another variety of turtle. Maybe a tortoise. They don’t need as much water except to drink. They are the land variety of turtle. Turtle=water, Tortoise=land.

all the turtles I can think of right off hand will outgrow a 20 gallon in just a couple years.

Maybe you should set up a terrarium and keep frogs? Dart frogs are really neat to watch. Tree frogs are interesting as well
