The shortest I know of is the red eared slider, which can live for about 40 years. These are the most popular pet turtles. I wouldn’t recommend a turtle if you don’t want to commit for a long time. Try looking for another kind of pet, like a frog.
“Scientists believe that many cold-blooded animals, especially turtles and tortoises, can live almost forever (well, one hundred years, at least) as they show no signs of aging as they get older. They die from being successfully attacked by one of their few natural predators, from the poisoning or destruction of their natural habitat and improper captive care.”
And just so you know, frogs can live 20 years plus. Go for a hamster or rat. They live 4-6 years. Nice, short lived pets.
The kind of pet turtle with the shortest lifespan, is one that is mistreated and not cared for right. Given the proper care, a pet turtle can outlive it’s owner.
Most of the ‘pond turtles’ like Red-ear sliders and Painted turtles only live about 20-30 years in the wild, and 5-30 years in captivity depending on care provided.
Just curious as to why you might want a pet that will die the quickest?
