What should I feed to ducks and turtles at the lake?

turtles
PPCUBAN asked:

I go to a lake close to my house. There are some ducks and turtles and they come to me hoping that I feed them. Unfortunately i don’t have a clue what they would like to eat. I guess bread, but i am not sure.

    NEVER give a duck bread!!

It can (and will) kill them. It can create an impaction in their digestive system, leaving them to starve to death, and its absolutely horrible for them as well.

It is best to leave them alone and don’t feed them anything at all. They are getting a balanced diet on their own, and processed human foods will only harm them. Feeding wild ducks also leads to disrupting migratory patterns since the ducks makes them want to stick around longer.

If you absolutely must feed them, go to a feed store or pet store and buy a small bag of cracked corn (or better yet, “scratch grains” or duck feed), its pretty cheap (50 pound bags cost $8, no idea on smaller quantities), and its alright for them to eat in moderation.

As for the turtles, it depends what kind they are, they might like lettuce (dark leaf, not iceberg), or luch meat. Of course, you shouldn’t be feeding them either ;-)

First, check carefully around the lake to make sure there are no signs banning the feeding of the wildlife. In many places where ducks and geese congregate in unusually high numbers due to feeding by well-intentioned people, laws have been passed to ban the feeding, so the animals do not become ill.

If feeding is not banned, please give the ducks cracked corn, oats and other grains. Do not give them too much.

Do NOT give them bread! “…although Ducks seem to love bread, it is not nutritious. White bread in particular is made from refined flour and is not proper for avian nutrition. Many Ducks suffer from degenerative liver disease because they eat too much. Also, leftover bread and Duck droppings pollute the water. The uneaten bread turns into a deadly mold called Aspergillus, which is fatal to Ducks, fish and other animals. Rotting bread can also breed other deadly diseases and parasites, particularly a Duck virus Enteritis, which with a single outbreak will kill all the Ducks of that area.

Duck droppings can also breed diseases such as Avian Botulism and a parasite that causes swimmers itch.

Feeding Ducks bread is like feeding Dogs chocolate. They may seem to like it but in the end it does more harm than good.”
