They are awesome pets, and not too costly, but they do require some specialized care and every turtle needs different temps, etc. Do some research on specific turtles you are interested in raises, then dive in. Make sure you get your new pet from a reputable source, many animals are sold illegally, and most turtles cannot be sold/keep if they are under 4 inches because they carry salmonella. There ARE remedies to rid turtles of the stuff though.
My turtle was nice and I kept him in a pool in the back yard with a big rock in the middle of it. He was a small turtle named shelly. Really cute pet. we fed him dog food and veggies. We cleaned his water out 1x a week.
some turtles bite though so pick one that you can handle w/o him getting agressive.
Depending on what kind you get, they can cost anywhere from $5.00 – $40.00 each (possibly more!) I bought two red eared sliders ($15.00 each.) A tank can cost anywhere from $19.99 – $100.00 (depending on how many gallons it will hold, a 10 gallon tank is about $19.99.)
You will also need:
Light
Food
Rock (or something they can climb on to get out of the water)
Water filter
gravel/rocks for the bottom of the tank
All of this can cost a lot (approx. $100.00)
They are great pets but need a lot of care, and need their tanks cleaned often. I wouldn’t suggest them for small children, as some turtles can bite.
They make great pets.
Super fun and they have amazing personalities.
I like land tortoises, not ones that have to swim. Keeping the water clean is difficult and gross.
Do lots of research!
Look into Russian Tortoises. They stay small and are vegetarians.
Chinese Box Turtles also stay small, but they eat bugs. I find that gross, but you might not.
Avoid Sulcatas and Leopard Tortoises. They get huge! Sulcattas push over fences (they grow to weigh upwards of 200 pounds) and get cranky.

turtles usually cost 16 to 45 dollars and the supplies like food and the tank it costs about 50 to 60 dollars depending on what size of tank you get
