How or when do painted turtles mate?

I have 2 painted turtles and I think they’re old enough to mate. I know that I have a girl and a boy.
My turtle tank is filled with only water, with a big rock for them to climb onto. I heard that they need sand to mate. Is that true??

Do I Need to add other things so they can mate?? Pleasee help! I really want baby turtles again!

    It’s going to cost a few hundred dollars to properly breed and raise baby turtles. I suggest not breeding. It is a lot of hard work and you should not breed unless you have years of experience with turtles.
