Since I got my red-ear slider turtles seven years ago. I have always wondered the genders of the turtles. One of my turtle is bigger and the other is smaller.

The easiest way to tell in mature turtles is that:

Males have very long front claws

Males’s bottom shell (pastron I think) is slightly curved in while females in flat or slightly bulging for eggs to have room

males are slightly bigger than females the same age

RES – males are more colorful, smaller, have longer fingernails, longer tail and concave plastron
females are larger, shorter tail, convex plastron

My vet told me that you can tell by looking at their tail. Males have longer tails, and females have shorter tails.
