Usually you can tell by the length of the front claws. A males claws will be much longer then a females.
The male will also have a longer tail than a female. Females are bigger than males. The vent at the base of the tail on a female is closer to the edge of the shell than a males.

You can also tell the gender of turtles because of there color. Male are brighter colors and females are darker colors.

Total Body length: 5-8″ average for males, up to 12 inches max for females. Life span: 15-25+ years
Males have the longer front nails and are used in mating. And are considered mature at about 5 yrs old. You can’t start sexing till about 3” across. As the turtle ages they become a dark green.

male turtles shells are slightly concave, so that when they climb all doggie style on top of girls, they don’t fall off.
