Concerning pet box turtles, is it okay to have corncob as a ground for them to walk on and lay eggs, etc?

Christopher M asked:

The place where I bought the box turtles, Hoffman’s reptile shop, said that corncob works just fine and I want to know if this is sound advice.
My mom say’s that the corncob is fine and that I shouldn’t worry about it.
Unfortunately, the corncob is all they sell.

box turtles will deal with any substrate as long as it is sturdy enough for them to walk on. its not good if their legs sink in at all. the best substrates would have to be either aspen bedding, repti-bark,or even plain old dirt.

box turtles need high humidity. Corn cob bedding has no humidity and if you get it wet enough to provide humdity to the enclosure then it molds and becomes swiftly toxic.

So no its not your best choice.

potting soil mixed 50/50 with play ground sand works well, and they love to dig down into it. Bed a beast is another good option.
