Mud and map turtles often stay about 4″ and their aquatic. Check out and they could probably make some suggestions-they aren’t just about RES despite the name.

uhm…. RES can only get to be about 11-12 inches each.

Southern Painted Sliders are sweet turtles and they stay pretty small

your RES will get big. please do not release them in the wild, they will die as they do not know how to take care of themselves. Please try to keep them… However, you can give them to a shelter but they are hard to adopt out because they are so common.

Most of the turtles that don’t grow big are too rare to be sold legally or to be posessed. The ones that are available are musk turtles (stinkpots) and painted turtles. However, if you are unwilling to invest the time, effort, and money necessary to maintain a turtle that could get big, you would probably be better off with another pet, such as a fish.

Red Eared Sliders won’t get big unless you get a special kind of light for them. I forget what it’s called, though.
