My Turtles

We are thinking of getting our son a pet turtle, but I was just wondering if they make good pets for little ones. Can you get miniature turtles that will stay really small? What about biting, are they big biters. Any suggestions for other pets (except dogs, and cats, allergies nothing with fur) would be greatly appreciated.

I have never had a pet turtle before, and I have always been curious to whether or not they are affectionate. I have heard that they have pretty long life spans. I am just curious to hear from people that have pet turtles if they like to be stroked or talked to or givin attention, or for the most part are they just pets you take care of and watch? Don’t worry I am not thinking about getting one. I am a cat person, like I said I am just very curious.

I have 1 dog right now. I love cats but I’m allergic to them. I have two boys. ages 3 and 8. They are wanting for us to bring a new pet into the family. I know I don’t want another dog right now, allergic to cats, We’ve tryed fish but they always die and get white growths on them for some reason, We’ve tryed hampsters and OH my how smelly their cages are after you go a day w/o cleaning it, So I was thinking maybe a small turtle?

So here are some questions.

Are turtles hard to look after?
Do they live under water or need water and a way to get out of the water?
Does the tank they are in set up mold and mildew fast?
Is it hard (or gorss) cleaning out their tank?
What is the good reasons for a pet turtle, and what are the bad things about them?
Do yuo think a turtle would be a good pet for two boys 3 and 8 yrs.? if so why? if not why… and what pet would?

My parents said I could get a pet turtle if i paid for it. In the past i have only taken care of fish and the family dogs, but i have always liked turtles. I am looking for something small, maybe 6 inches long at the most, something outgoing and smart that does not need to be in water to live because i will be traveling with it often. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I want to get a turtle from Petland or another store, but does anyone know if they are good pets to have? I want a type of turtle that would be more active than the other kinds, one that doesn’t just sit in it’s tank all day, do you know of any types of turtles like that? If you don’t, do you have any suggestions for a good turtle to have?

Also, what things should I put in a turtle’s tank?

How much time should the turtle spend in and out of their water tank? My kids ~love~ their new turtle and want him out a ~lot~ but I’ve been limiting it because I don’t know how much time a turtle should be out of water. They aren’t ‘handling’ him, just watching him walk around the living room. (And yes they DO wash their hands after every time they touch him) Thanks!
